The shelters are beginning to feel the effects of the down turn of the economy and especially the housing market problems. We have started receiving emails that some of the shelters are seeing a large increase in the number of pets turned into them because of the economy. Some of the shelters are having to put more animals into kennel runs than they were designed to handle. Shelter environments are very stressful and having over crowded kennels makes the situation that much worse. If you are considering adoping a pet please consider adopting one from your local animal shelter. Thanks, Lab Rescue

i wonder if these people are surrendering their children to orphanages. to me it's the same thing. a dog is a lifetime commitment, too many people don't or won't understand that and give up the dog for a job, a new house, kids, etc. heartbreaking and infuriating.

Thanks for your comment Shelby. The economy is a real problem. I have heard on the news that some people are just leaving their animals in their forclosed homes when they leave. I guess the best we can hope for is that the owners contact groups like ours so we can find homes for them. I think we found homes for about 350 dogs for 2008 which I think may be our busiest year. Hopefully 2009 will be better. Thanks, Lab Rescue
