We saw Onix on the site and since he was close by in Menlo Park, we called Holly, the representative and agreed for a visit. When we greeted him for the first time at the vet, he immediately enamored himself to us. He took a long walk around the neighborhood and was very obdient and inquisitive (as labs should be) but not a tractor dog. Holly walked along with us and by the end of the walk, two great things occurred. 1st, we were able to save Holly a drive up to Benicia because 2nd, we decided to adopt him right there on the spot.

He loaded up into the back without any fuss and settled down nicely. When we picked our kids up from school, they were so excited and he showed their love back with kisses and nuzzling. >From the first day, he always goes with us in the car to drop off and pick up from school.

He has become so much a part of our family and loves to have his belly scratched and rubbed. He has an upstairs pillow and a downstairs one. He is obedient, calm (thank god, compared to our previous lab) and sooo loving. It is such a bright spot in everyones day whenever he sees us and happily comes to say hi. When our son sits down next to him on his pillow, he immediately puts his head in his lap and gently takes pets and rubs.

Onix's story of coming to Labrescue was not one of neglect or abuse, but rather an overwhelming situation from the previous owner and we are grateful to have been given the chance to have such a wonderful dog come into our lives.

Thank you lab rescue.

Matt Anne Andrew Natalie Ken

Well, more good news. Animal Care and Control where she was brought in as a stray. S.F.A.C.C. asked us to take her because she was too frightened and was not doing well there. Since we've taken her out things have gotten much better. Izzie has proven to be a really good dog. She is very sweet and listens very well. She knows most basic commands, is housebroken, and is very good with other dogs. She would make a very good second dog in a family. At the dog park she has done well with both people and dogs. We do not know about cats.
In her foster home Izzie has been a very good guest and has gotten along very well with their three dogs. She loves to play ball . So if you are sent this email, disregard it.

We are still receiving requests from people to help find homes for their dogs because they are being forced out of the homes. So far we have been able to help. Our website has really helped us increase the number of dogs we help place. In 2008 we helped place over 350 Labs and Lab mixes. Please pass our website url to your friends and family that may be interested in adopting a Lab or Lab mix. Thanks, Golden Gate Lab Rescue

Hello we are Diesel and Molly. For 5 years we lived with our family. There was even a young child, born when we were younger, that we lived with. We are both altered. One day we took a trip in the car and went to a place we had never visited before. The sign said this was a shelter. We saw tears in out human's eyes when he explained to the kind people behind the counter that he had cancer and could no longer care for us. He brought his young son with him to say good bye to us. He explained that we were the very best doggies. We now live in a kennel together to make this transition easier. We hope we might go home together, but understand that might not be possible. We are a mix of Chocolate Lab and German Shorthaired Pointer, though we look very lab-like. We live in a shelter in Ukiah, just 2 hours from the Bay Area, and hope you will email to learn how to take us home. Tell them Lab Rescue sent you. 7/1/08

7/5/08 Well we received an email today from the Animal Rescue from Anderson Valley that both Diesel and Molly had been adopted by someone who saw them on our Lab Rescue website. We have been very fortunate over the years to be able to help find new homes for pairs of Labs like Diesel and Molly so they don't have to be separated after they have lived together for many years. Sometimes it really is easier to adopt two Labs instead of one. They seem to help each other adjust to their new homes faster.

7/7/08 Woops. You are right. Unfortunately I have already removed their pictures from our website so I can't post their photos. Take my word for it they are very nice chocolates. We have started receiving emails that some of the shelters are seeing a large increase in the number of pets turned into them because of the economy. Some of the shelters are having to put more animals into kennel runs than they were designed to handle. Shelter environments are very stressful and having over crowded kennels makes the situation that much worse. If you are considering adoping a pet please consider adopting one from your local animal shelter. The percentage of dogs put to sleep at rural shelters seems to be higher than shelters in the bay area proper. We have been able to help these shelters in two important ways.

First, some of the bay area shelters, notably the Peninsula Humane Society, monitor our website and then they travel to the rural shelters, pick up the dogs and then bring them back to the bay area and make them ready for adoption.

Second, I receive emails from that many people travel 3-5 hours to these rural shelters to adopt dogs they see on our website. When the shelters see these dogs being adopted, many tend to keep the dogs at their shelters for longer periods of time before they are put to sleep.

Please watch our website for the daily updates. He was able to catch them and had them waiting in his garage for me. When I arrived, they were both very scared and it took about half an hour to pull them out from under his car.

I wasn’t sure how I was going to break the news to my husband that I was bringing home 2, 4 month old pups. He had made me promise that I wouldn’t foster any more dogs.

When I arrived home, I closed the kitchen door and brought them both into the kitchen. This was really the first time that I was able to get a really good look at them. They were covered with foxtails, dirt, and grease from being under the car. They both ran as far away from us as they could, huddle up in the corner of the kitchen. By this time by husband was home and in the kitchen with me. We decided to just sit on the kitchen floor with some food and waited for them to approach us. We waited a very long time and they never came out of the corner. We finally approached them and one of them peed as we got closer. The other one had even more foxtails than the one that peed. We named them “Scarecrow” (for the one with the most foxtails), and “The Wiz” for the one that peed in the kitchen.

We finally had the pups in our hands and began pulling out foxtails and cleaning the grease from their coats. It took us well over an hour to clean them up enough to put them in the bathtub. A good bath, some flea spray and a good dinner and the pups were fast asleep. Over the next few weeks we socialized them and did some basic puppy training.

In the following weeks two families came forward and adopted the pups. “Scarecrow” went to a family in San Francisco and the “The Wiz” was adopted by a nurse that I worked with at Packard Children’s hospital. She and her husband had two small kids that were thrilled to have a new addition to their family and had renamed him “Hercules”. A few weeks ago she called to tell me the sad news that “Hercules” had died.

It seems like it was just yesterday that we had gotten them all cleaned up to go to their new homes…… but it was more than 12 years ago. I had lost track of time. Each December I would receive a Christmas card with a family picture which always included “Hercules” aka “The Wiz”. She would include cute stories about how he would be dressed up to attend Samantha’s tea parties, or when she would take Hercules to kindergarten for show and tell. As the kids grew, Hercules grew with them, ridding in his bother’s truck and welcoming him back when he returned from college on holidays. Hercules was a much loved member of their family and we were all saddened to hear of his passing.

Golden Gate Lab Rescue
Weekends are a good time to visit shelters to adopt your new best friend.........but don't forget about the weekdays! Many shelters stay open later at least one evening during the week. Most shelters put animals to sleep every day so don't wait for the weekend to adopt. The pet you have your eye on on our website on Tuesday may not be available the next day. So a word to the wise..... if you see a pet you are interested in Call that shelter the first day you see them. Even a phone call to the shelter alerting them of your interest may give the pet a few more days at the shelter before they are put to sleep.

Welcome to the Golden Gate Labrador Rescue blog. You can visit our webpage at http://www.labrescue.org to see a list of Labs available through us as well as Labs and Lab mixes that are available from other rescue groups and shelters in the San Francisco bay area.

Our service area is the San Francisco bay area. We only place Labs with adopters within our service area. We have had to do this because we have had problems in the past with people adopting dogs who live out side our area, then deciding they no longer want the dog and refusing to drive the dog back to us.

I tend to post Labs and Lab mixes from shelters that are not really in our service area. I do this because they are in rural areas that tend to have a lot more dogs than adopters. We have been very successful in helping find homes for dogs at the Merced, Tehama, Madera, and Nevada County Shelters. I receive emails frequently from adopters that say they drive 3 hours to adopt a Lab they see on our website. I have also heard that because the shelters know that we send people to their shelters , they tend to keep dogs at the shelters longer before they are being put to sleep.

Our rescue is a made up of a very small group of Lab owners. "If you know of a Lab in need of a home or a home in need of a Lab" contact us (as long as you are in the SF bay area).

Please visit our website at http://labrescue.org . It's updated each evening after work.
